False Rumors

Many who served in the military were discharged without having their decorations entered on their discharge papers (DD-214). You can go on line and request an update with awards & decorations revised. Go to national archives and request an online search.

False Rumors

There has been a false rumor regarding destruction of veterans records.  The rumor hinders the National Personnel Records Center’s ability to answer veterans’ reference requests.  Please read the article in the National Archives.

Commonwealth of Massachusetts Medal of Liberty

The Medal of Liberty, open to all branches of service, is awarded in the name of the Governor as Commander-in-Chief of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, to any service man or woman killed in action or who died as a result of wounds received in action.

The medal is heart shaped and symbolic of the Purple Heart with a gold border. The center of the medal bears the Gold Star. The top center of the medal is the coat-of-arms of the Commonwealth. The reverse of the medal top depicts the branch of service of the member. The reverse consists of the words "In Honored Memory" above the name engraving surface and "Service and Sacrifice" below.

Korean Defense Service Medal

The Defense Department announced today the creation of the Korean Defense Service Medal (KDSM). The KDSM is a service medal to give special recognition for the sacrifices and contributions made by members of the U.S. Armed Forces who have served or are serving in the Republic of Korea.

Public Law 107-314 legislated the creation of a new medal to recognize military service in the Republic of Korea and the surrounding waters. Members of the armed forces authorized the KDSM must have served in support of the defense of the Republic of Korea. The area of eligibility encompasses all land area of the Republic of Korea, and the contiguous water out to 12 nautical miles, and all air spaces above the land and water areas.

The KDSM period of eligibility is July 28, 1954, to a future date to be determined by the secretary of defense.
