QUOTE OF THE MONTH

I now know why men who have been to war yearn to reunite. Not to tell stories or look at old pictures. Not to laugh or weep. Comrades gather because they long to be with the men who once acted their best, men who suffered and sacrificed, who were stripped raw, right down to their humanity.

I did not pick these men. They were delivered by fate. But I know them in a way I know no other men. I have never given anyone such trust. They were willing to guard something more precious than my life. They would have carried my reputation, the memory of me. It was part of the bargain we all made, the reason we were so willing to die for one another.

I cannot say where we are headed. Ours are not perfect friendships; those are the province of legend and myth. A few of my comrade’s drift far from me now, sending back only occasional word. I know that one day even these could fall to silence. Some of the men will stay close, a couple, perhaps, always at hand.

As long as I have memory, I will think of them all, every day. I am sure that when I leave this world, my last thought will be of my family and my comrades...such good men.

Starting May 1, 2009, the Department of Veterans Affairs will begin accepting applications for the Post-9/11 GI Bill. The application form is available online.

Homeowners' Protection Under SCRA
VR SAM® continues to be inundated with stories of military families facing foreclosure and repeated deployments. One question that keeps surfacing is what relief can military members receive through the Service Members Civil Relief Act (SCRA) of 2003? We need to state a very important caveat: Relief under SCRA is a legal issue and those seeking relief should consult an attorney experienced in SCRA.  News on the New GI Bill

Get more information on the "Post 9/11 GI Bill"

The new "Post 9/11 GI Bill" will soon be heading for the President’s desk. This new benefit will give servicemembers and veterans who have served on active-duty since Sept. 11, 2001, a new education benefits package worth up to roughly $3,000 a month. The same legislation includes a change to the current Montgomery GI Bill that will increase the monthly payment to $1,321 a month -- a total benefit of more than $47,000. The new law also enables servicemembers to transfer their GI Bill benefit to their dependents.    Military.com

WEST ROXBURY - Military families who travel to the West Roxbury VA for long-term medical care will soon have the option of staying on the hospital’s campus. The West Roxbury facility was recently chosen to be the site of a Fisher House; according to Diane Keefe of the Veterans Administration, a Fisher House is similar to a Ronald McDonald House, but for military families

For veterans filing their Commonwealth of Massachusetts state taxes, please note:

  • Enrollment with the VA is deemed qualified “insurance” in terms of the mandated health care coverage provision
  • Veterans should simply check-off Box 3D on their Schedule HC, which should be submitted with their Form 1 (Main tax form)
  • A letter from the VA is not needed as proof of coverage in terms of filing state taxes, unless subsequently requested to a specific veteran by the MA Dept. of Revenue

Alert! VA Puts Forth Refinance Plan to Help Veterans in Mortgage Crisis.
  • IRRRL stands for Interest Rate Reduction Refinancing Loan.  You may see it referred to as a "Streamline" or a "VA to VA."  Except when refinancing an existing VA guaranteed adjustable rate mortgage (ARM) to a fixed rate, it must result in a lower interest rate.  When refinancing from an existing VA ARM loan to a fixed rate, the interest rate may increase.
