This week I bought a new Toyota Rav 4  from Hyannis Toyota. When I went over the paper work I noticed I was charged the sales tax. The person I was dealing with was not aware of the new law for Disabled Veterans with the new Disabled Veterans Plates. I had to show her were it says we are exempt. She went to the Mass Registry Web page and typed in Disabled Veterans Plates and the information came up. She then had to go to a supervisor and came back saying I needed documentation, like a my award letter, I showed my VA medical card. I informed her that all the documation was accomplished through the Registry Medical Affairs Office and explained that they are the ones who issue the plates after all the documation, award letter and application is submitted.  She then wasn’t convinced so she call the registry and talked to an officer. He then confirmed that we are exempt from paying the Sales Tax as long as we have the Plates, which I have. She was very professional and willing the check out what I said.

So if you’re buying a new car for yourself make sure you’re not charged the sales tax, You must have the plates to get the exemption. I’m sure Hyannis Toyota is not the only dealership who isn’t aware of the exemption.

Now on to the Town of Yarmouth when my new exercise bill arrives, this will a lot of fun, since I was exempt on my old Rav 4 and I will exempt on the new one. I have the documation that you are exempt as long as you show that the old vehicle was traded in and the registration was transferred to the new one. The town thought you only got one exemption in a year, this is not true.

I hope this information will be helpful for anyone who is buying a new car.

Be Well
