Destitute veterans in Massachusetts are eligible for significant financial assistance to ensure dignified burials through state-specific allowances and free burial options. 

Financial Allowances:

  • General Indigent Allowance: A local Veterans' Service Officer may grant an allowance of up to $2,000 if total funeral costs do not exceed $3,000. 

  • Chapter 115 Assistance: Veterans receiving aid under M.G.L. Chapter 115 may qualify for up to $4,000 if total expenses do not exceed $5,000. 

  • Eligibility: These benefits are means-tested and available to veterans, spouses, and dependent children who lack sufficient funds to cover funeral expenses. 

Free Burial Options:

  • State Cemeteries: Eligible veterans can be buried at no cost in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemeteries located in Agawam and Winchendon This covers the gravesite, liner, and perpetual care.

  • National Cemetery: The Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne also provides free burial for eligible veterans, including the grave, marker, and flag. 

Required Documentation:

  • To apply, families must provide the veteran's DD-214 discharge papers, a certified death certificate, and proof of financial need. 

  • Families should contact their local Veterans' Service Officer (VSO) for assistance with applications and to determine specific eligibility.
