October Newsletter

Very busy summer for our organization.  August 28th we finished the last part of the Disabled Veterans home in Hyannis, the picture window and 3 others were replaced. Much thanks to Barnstable Sheriff’s Dept. and Nauset Disposal for their help. A full listing of costs associated with this work, (materials, coffee and lunch for the work crews, demolition disposal cost, equipment for workers, etc.) will be discussed. All needed repairs have been done to allow the Disabled Veteran to keep his Home Insurance and home.

 Received thank you letter from Coast Guard Station Chatham for the Family Day Cookout we gave the Station and families on June 7th.  Also a thank you from The Wounded Warfighters from Spaulding CCVI took out on June 9th for a day of fishing, sit down diner with the 140 lbs. of fish they caught and the $50 gift cards in Falmouth on June 9th. August 15th VP Richie Sayers ran a “Bucket Challenge” to support the USCG Chaplain at Join Base Cape Cod. CCVI raised $1,000 for the Chaplain’s work with needy families on the base and homeless Veterans.

August 21st member Vincent Mannion-Brodeur was honored in Buzzards Bay, at the Cape Cod Canal Centennial Event by riding on the Budweiser Clydesdales’ Wagon. See pictures on Facebook or web site. Great to see so many members there.

August 22nd delivered CCVI $50 TD Bank Gift cards to the VA Readjustment center for use to needy Veterans and their families. A supply will always be on hand for immediate help to Veterans in need.

September 13th Lobster Roll Cruise on Cape Cod Canal was super as usual, thanks to Joe Buscone for the donation.

Sand Dollars For Soldiers on September 14th was a fantastic time. Terry O’Donnell did great lining up the musicians and gifts, Terry raised over $8,000 for CCVI and Terry Brennan did a great job as the MC. Thanks to all who contributed. Many Disabled Veterans their families and great organizations will benefit from Terry O’Donnell’s generosity.

A new electric Wheelchair with new batteries was trailered to Bourne Manor on September 16th for a severely Disabled Vietnam Veteran by Finance Officer Scott Martin and Staff. This was delivered at no cost, and a CCVI TD Bank $50 gift card was also donated along with a CCVI Challenge Coin.

On September 23rd Staff members went to Joint Base Cape Cod to deliver a $1,000 check to USCG Chaplain Lt. Robert Mills. His great work caring for those on the base and in Cape communities deserves to be recognized.

September 25th staff was with several other Veterans organizations at the Hope Health Seminar at Barnstable Senior Center to discuss the program that Hope Health offers to Veterans through their Hospice programs.

September 26th 17 members traveled to Boston for the dedication of the Cpl. Vincent Mannion-Brodeur Patient Room in the new Spaulding Rehabilitation Center in Charlestown. A great honor for member Vincent, Jeff, Maura and family. Dr. Rocco Armonda, a retired Colonel and West Point  Graduate who saved Vincent and hundreds of others was there also to be honored. A day to be thankful for all our blessings.

October 11th is our Wings fest at the Cape Cod Irish Village. The Festivities start at Noon with 12 -15 contestants vying for trophies. The judges lead by Matt Pita of 95.1FM will pick from a variety of categories. Live music, raffle, $10 donation.

The 4th Annual Kenny McGilvray Halloween Shootout will take place at Blue Rock Golf Course October 25th at 10AM. Cost is $85, prizes, gifts, and get together at the Sand Dollar after golf for great food and music. Hole sponsors are $50. And yes, Sarah Swain and the Oh Boys will be at our Veterans Day Concert at the Irish Village from 2-6 PM, November 9th,  More to follow.

The Rededication of the Merrill Park Walkway and sitting area will be November 11th at 1 PM. The materials have been purchased from Mid-Cape Home Center, and thank you for the discount. Cape Cod Veterans Inc., VFW Post 10274, and Brian Everett of Town of Dennis Natural Recourses have worked diligently to ensure that the park will suitable of the honor it deserves. Thanks to the Dennis DPW for their work on this project. Two Hundred boards, five feet in length, will be engraved with the names of Veterans or family members that will grace the walkway. Each board is $80 with the max of 22 characters. The cost of engraving each board is $40 each. A gathering will follow the ceremony at O’Shea’s Old Inn, all invited. All monies, which is a separate account, unused for the park only, will be turned over to the Town of Dennis upon completion of work.

CCVI Chaplain Janice Riehle won 1st Honorable Award at the Boston’s Commonwealth Museum of Art competition. “Summer Sunset at West Dennis Beach”

CCVI has received over 30 emails this month requesting assistance or help with benefits. All events photos and thank you letters are on web site.
